Torpedoes on battleships are more of a scare tactic to players that understand that you have torpedoes, and a punishing tool for those players that don't understand you have torpedoes. Well, for me, it's all about sneaking into secondary range (11.34km) (which will be considerably easier once I get my captain to 18 points for Concealment Expert and put the concealment upgrade on it.), activating my manual secondaries, and showering the enemy with fire bombs. Because the Tirpitz has torps, it doesn't get hydro like the Bismark does the ships are nearly identical otherwise. Gneisenau only has 6 main guns, three doubles, which can leave you feeling underpowered and can make your dispersion seem worse than it is (because you're only throwing 6 shells at a time). Just keep in mind that by picking up torps, you're losing something else in the balance. Guns, guns, and more (and bigger) guns, and dealing with big guns being fired at you (among other things). but having gotten into the Bismark, I can safely say that torps in a BB are nothing to write home about. I thought the only BB I wanted was the Gneisenau because it has torps. Torps on a BB are neat and can be a life saver for those close-in duels, but as others have pointed out, they're pretty situational. As Ryuu and Torchfire pointed out, Gneisenau is the only non-premium BB with torps.
